The 1st Marine Division landed at Guadalcanal with limited supplies, outdated maps, and orders to seize a critical Japanese airfield. Under Major General Alexander Vandegrift, the Marines captured Henderson Field and held it against relentless Japanese counterattacks, naval bombardments, and conditions so brutal that 8,580 Marines contracted malaria. Heroes like “Manila John” Basilone and “Chesty” Puller wrote their names into Marine Corps legend on these jungle ridges. The division earned its first Presidential Unit Citation and adopted “Waltzing Matilda” as its battle hymn during rest in Melbourne, Australia. This was the campaign that proved America could take the fight to Japan — and win.
