The 1st Marine Aircraft Wing is the aviation combat element of III Marine Expeditionary Force, headquartered at MCAS Futenma, Okinawa, Japan. Commissioned in 1941, 1st MAW is the Marine Corps’ forward-deployed air wing in the Indo-Pacific — the most strategically vital region on the planet. The wing’s squadrons have fought from Guadalcanal and Okinawa through Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, and the Global War on Terror. Today, 1st MAW operates F-35B Lightning IIs, MV-22 Ospreys, and the full range of Marine aviation platforms across the Pacific theater.
