The 6th Marines’ history begins in the trenches of France during World War I, where the regiment earned its Devil Dog reputation at Belleau Wood, Soissons, and the Meuse-Argonne. In WWII, the 6th Marines fought at Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian, and Okinawa. 1/6 has continued the tradition through deployments to the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan, maintaining the 2nd Marine Division’s reputation as a force in readiness on the east coast.
