Description
**Officially Licensed US Navy VF(AW)-3 Blue Nemesis Sticker — All-Weather Fighter Squadron Vinyl Sticker**
VF(AW)-3 Blue Nemesis — the only Navy fighter squadron assigned to NORAD. While the Air Force scrambled interceptors, these Navy pilots in their F4D Skyrays were routinely beating them off the line. Two F4Ds in three minutes flat.
VF(AW)-3, the “Blue Nemesis,” carries a lineage stretching back to Composite Squadron 3 (VC-3), established on 20 May 1949. VC-3 provided night fighter detachments to Pacific Fleet carriers flying the F4U-5N Corsair, and Lieutenant Guy Bordelon of VC-3 became the only Navy ace of the Korean War, shooting down his fifth enemy aircraft on 16 July 1953. The squadron also served as a pioneering transitional training unit, earning the nicknames “Cougar College,” “Cutlass Classroom,” and “Crusader College” as it introduced fleet pilots to the Navy’s newest high-performance jets. In 1958, the second VF(AW)-3 assumed the Blue Nemesis name and insignia, operating 25 F4D-1 Skyrays from NAS North Island in a continental air defense role under the USAF’s 27th Air Division. The squadron consistently outperformed Air Force interceptor units and won NORAD’s “best performing unit” trophy twice. During the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, Detachment Echo at NAS Key West kept four Skyrays on five-minute alert. VF(AW)-3 was decommissioned in April 1963.
