VA-96 — a short-lived Cold War attack squadron that packed a lot of service into less than two years, operating Skyraiders from the Pacific Fleet.

VA-96 was a U.S. Navy attack squadron established on June 30, 1956, at NAS Miramar, California. The squadron flew the Douglas AD-6 Skyraider and was assigned to Pacific Fleet carrier operations. Despite its brief existence, VA-96 saw significant operational service — deploying aboard USS Kearsarge and operating in the vicinity of Taiwan in September 1957 during the buildup of Chinese communist forces opposite the offshore islands belonging to Nationalist China. Tragically, the squadron’s commanding officer, Commander M. K. Dennis, was lost in a night midair collision while operating from USS Kearsarge off the coast of California in June 1957. VA-96 was disestablished on April 10, 1958, less than two years after its establishment.
