Description
**Officially Licensed US Navy VA-196 Main Battery Sticker — Attack Squadron Vinyl Sticker**
VA-196 Main Battery — 48 years of service, 30 deployments, 73 unit commendations, and the inspiration for “Flight of the Intruder.” The Main Battery earned every round they fired.
VA-196, the “Main Battery,” was established as VF-153 on July 15, 1948, and redesignated VA-196 on May 4, 1955. The squadron’s insignia — an ace of spades with a devil face — symbolized the death-dealing blow of their A-6 Intruder squadron in combat. VA-196 saw action in nearly every major conflict from the Tachen Islands evacuation in 1955 through Desert Shield in 1990. During Vietnam, the squadron’s CO was shot down and taken prisoner in 1967, and LCDR Charles B. Hunter conducted a legendary single-plane night raid into Haiphong Harbor — the mission that inspired the movie “Flight of the Intruder.” The Main Battery participated in Operations Linebacker, Linebacker II, Frequent Wind, Earnest Will, and Desert Shield. As the last operational A-6 Intruder squadron in the Pacific Fleet, VA-196 was disestablished on February 28, 1997, after winning every major operational and safety award the Navy offered.
