VA-152 Mavericks — from Korean War Corsairs to the second-to-last Skyraider combat squadron in Vietnam. They survived the USS Oriskany fire and kept flying.

VA-152, known as the “Fighting Aces,” the “Friendlies,” and finally the “Mavericks,” was established as Reserve Fighter Squadron VF-713 in the late 1940s and called to active duty in February 1951 for the Korean War. Redesignated VF-152 in 1953 and VA-152 in 1958, the squadron flew F4U Corsairs, F2H Banshees, AD Skyraiders, and A-4 Skyhawks across a 20-year career. VA-152 was the second-to-last Navy attack squadron to fly the single-seat A-1 Skyraider in combat, completing their final Skyraider tour aboard USS Oriskany in 1967-68. The squadron lost two personnel in the devastating October 1966 Oriskany fire. In 1964, squadron personnel deployed ashore to Bien Hoa Air Base, South Vietnam, to train South Vietnamese pilots to fly the A-1. VA-152 was disestablished on January 29, 1971.
