VA-104 Hell’s Archers — Cold War attack aviators who stood ready from the Suez Crisis to the Lebanon landings, always on the tip of the carrier’s spear.

VA-104, the “Hell’s Archers,” was established as Fighter Squadron VF-104 on May 1, 1952, and redesignated VA-104 in December 1953. Based at NAS Cecil Field, the squadron flew AD Skyraiders from Atlantic Fleet carriers throughout the 1950s. In November 1956, during the Suez War, VA-104 operated from USS Coral Sea off the coast of Egypt, providing air support for the evacuation of Americans and foreign nationals. In July 1958, the squadron stood ready aboard USS Forrestal in the eastern Atlantic, prepared to enter the Mediterranean in support of the Marine landings in Beirut, Lebanon. VA-104 was disestablished on March 31, 1959.
