Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light 49 (HSL-49) “Scorpions” was a United States Navy helicopter squadron that operated the SH-60B Seahawk in the anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and anti-surface warfare (ASuW) roles. The Scorpions deployed detachments aboard frigates, destroyers, and cruisers across the Pacific Fleet, providing organic helicopter capability for surface combatants. HSL-49 crews hunted submarines, tracked surface contacts, conducted search and rescue, and extended the tactical reach of every ship they deployed on. The squadron has since been redesignated as part of the HSM community, but the Scorpions’ legacy endures in every Seahawk detachment that deploys aboard a surface combatant today.
