Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light 40 (HSL-40), the “Airwolves,” was established on 4 October 1985 at Naval Station Mayport, Florida, as one of only two SH-60B Seahawk Fleet Readiness Squadrons in the world. The Airwolves’ mission was to train fleet replacement pilots and aircrew to “fight and win at sea” — and every East Coast helicopter crew that strapped into a Seahawk passed through HSL-40’s program first.
With 12 aircraft, three weapons/tactics trainers, and two full-motion flight simulators, HSL-40 trained pilots and aircrew of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet along with foreign students from around the globe. The squadron’s 58 fleet-seasoned instructor pilots and aircrew conducted aircraft, ground, and simulator training events that prepared students for the challenge of serving on operational SH-60B detachments aboard small-deck warships at sea. In November 2009, HSL-40 was redesignated Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 40 (HSM-40) and transitioned to the MH-60R Seahawk. This patch honors the original HSL-40 Airwolves identity.
