VMA-542 “Tigers” operated the AV-8B Harrier II from MCAS Cherry Point under MAG-14, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. The Tigers deployed extensively to Iraq and Afghanistan, providing close air support and armed reconnaissance from forward operating bases and amphibious ships. VMA-542’s WWII lineage includes service in the Pacific, where the original squadron flew combat missions against Japanese forces. The Tigers transitioned to the F-35B Lightning II era as VMFA-542.
