HMLA-367 Scarface Coin
Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 367 (HMLA-367) — “Scarface” — Challenge Coin
Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 367 (HMLA-367), the legendary “Scarface,” traces its lineage to Marine Observation Squadron 3 (VMO-3), established during World War II. Following a post-war deactivation in 1949, the squadron was reactivated in 1966 to support operations in Vietnam, where it earned the iconic “Scarface” callsign that has defined the unit for over five decades. HMLA-367 was the first Marine squadron to fly the AH-1G Cobra attack helicopter in combat, pioneering rotary-wing attack tactics in Southeast Asia.
Scarface went on to support Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in 1990-1991, Operation Iraqi Freedom II including the intense Battle of Fallujah in 2004, and deployed to Afghanistan in 2009 after transitioning its Huey pilots to the new UH-1Y Venom. The squadron was temporarily stood down at MCAS Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, in April 2022, but was reactivated on 16 December 2022 at MCAS Camp Pendleton under Marine Aircraft Group 39 (MAG-39), 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, replacing the deactivated HMLA-469 “Vengeance” as part of the Force Design 2030 initiative.
Today, HMLA-367 operates the AH-1Z Viper and UH-1Y Venom from MCAS Camp Pendleton, carrying forward a combat heritage spanning from Vietnam to Afghanistan. This challenge coin commemorates one of the most storied rotary-wing squadrons in Marine Corps history.
Perfect For: HMLA-367 Scarface Marines past and present, MAG-39 personnel, 3rd MAW members, AH-1Z Viper and UH-1Y Venom crew, Camp Pendleton aviators, and Marine Corps challenge coin collectors.
A tribute to Scarface — from the first Cobra in combat to the modern Viper, HMLA-367 continues to bring the fight wherever Marines need close air support.
