Description

Officially Licensed US Navy HS-6 Indians Squadron Patch — Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron 6 Embroidered Patch

The Indians — Cold War sub hunters who took the Seahawk to sea in defense of the carrier battle group.

Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron 6 (HS-6), the “Indians,” was a U.S. Navy carrier-based helicopter squadron that conducted anti-submarine warfare, search and rescue, and logistics support missions from the flight decks of aircraft carriers across the Pacific Fleet. HS-6 operated the SH-60F Seahawk and HH-60H Rescue Hawk, deploying with carrier air wings to provide the inner-zone ASW defense that protected the carrier battle group from submarine attack.

The Indians were part of the helicopter antisubmarine community that served as the carrier’s last line of defense against enemy submarines that penetrated the outer defensive rings. HS-6 crews operated dipping sonar, deployed sonobuoys, and conducted active and passive acoustic searches in the waters surrounding the carrier — the most critical piece of ocean in the battle group’s formation. Beyond ASW, the Indians provided combat search and rescue, naval special warfare support, and vertical replenishment, making HS-6 one of the most versatile squadrons in the carrier air wing. The squadron was redesignated as part of the Navy’s transition from HS to HSC and HSM designations.
