The Department of War was the original executive department responsible for the nation’s defense, predating the Department of Defense that replaced it in 1947. This patch represents the heritage of American military administration stretching back to the founding of the republic.

The Department of War was established in 1789 as one of the original executive departments of the United States government, responsible for administering the Army and, at various times, other military forces. The department was led by the Secretary of War and oversaw American military operations from the Revolutionary War through World War II. In 1947, the Department of War was reorganized into the Department of the Army under the newly created Department of Defense.
