Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 169 (HMLA-169), the “Vipers,” detached AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters and UH-1Y Venom utility helicopters to serve as the light attack helicopter element of the 31st MEU’s Aviation Combat Element. “Skid” is the informal term for the AH-1 and UH-1 helicopter families, referring to their landing skid gear as opposed to the wheeled landing gear of larger helicopters.
