The handful of surviving aircraft and their pilots fought until they were overrun, and the name “Wake Island Avengers” was adopted to honor their sacrifice and vow to avenge the defeat. Today’s VMFA-211 carries that legacy into the fifth-generation era, operating the stealthy, STOVL-capable F-35B from both shore bases and amphibious assault ships.
