VA-165, the “Boomers,” was established on September 1, 1960, and served for 35 years before disestablishment in September 1996. Flying A-1 Skyraiders and later A-6 Intruders, the Boomers were among the first carrier-based attack squadrons in combat over Southeast Asia. They completed six Vietnam combat deployments, flying over 3,100 combat sorties and expending 11 million pounds of ordnance. The squadron earned the Presidential Unit Citation for their performance during Operations Freedom Train and Linebacker. In 1974, VA-165 aboard USS Constellation was part of the first American carrier to operate in the Persian Gulf in 26 years. The Boomers won the Wade McClusky Award in 1987 as the Navy’s best attack squadron, participated in the filming of Flight of the Intruder in 1989, and their final deployment included transiting the Taiwan Strait during the 1995-96 Third Taiwan Strait Crisis aboard USS Nimitz.
