Description
**Officially Licensed US Navy VF-124 Gunfighters Sticker — Fighter Squadron Vinyl Sticker**
VF-124 Gunfighters — the Pacific Fleet’s Tomcat schoolhouse. Every West Coast F-14 crew that ever strapped into a Tomcat got their wings through this squadron first.
VF-124 was originally established as VF-53 on 16 August 1948 at NAS Moffett Field, California, and redesignated VF-124 on 11 April 1958 to meet growing demand for fighter training squadrons as swept-wing jets entered the fleet. The squadron relocated to NAS Miramar in 1961, the Pacific Fleet’s master jet base, and served as the Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) for the F-8 Crusader, training newly winged USN and USMC fighter pilots. In 1972, VF-124 transitioned to the F-14A Tomcat, commissioning the Navy’s first operational Tomcat squadrons — VF-1 and VF-2 — just days after receiving its first aircraft on 8 October 1972. The Gunfighters trained pilots, radar intercept officers, and maintenance personnel for every Pacific Fleet F-14 unit, and even trained Imperial Iranian Air Force crews in 1976 before the fall of the Shah. VF-124 later took on TARPS reconnaissance pod training and accepted the F-14D Super Tomcat in November 1990. The squadron was disestablished in September 1994 as post-Cold War drawdowns consolidated F-14 training on the East Coast.
