The Fighting Marlins of VP-40 deploy detachments to NAS Sigonella, Sicily, to conduct maritime patrol operations across the Mediterranean, North Africa, and beyond. This patch represents the Sigonella detachment that provides persistent maritime domain awareness from the heart of the Med.

VP-40, the Fighting Marlins, operates the P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft. The squadron’s Sigonella detachment operates from Naval Air Station Sigonella on the island of Sicily, conducting anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions across the Mediterranean Sea, the waters around Europe and Africa, and into the Middle East. Sigonella’s strategic location makes it the ideal hub for maritime patrol operations in the Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean.
