HMH-461 Iron Horse Throwback — Embroidered Patch
Iron Horse — The Oldest Heavy Lift Squadron
This throwback patch takes you back to the roots of HMH-461, the oldest active heavy-lift helicopter squadron in the Marine Corps. From the Corsairs of World War II to the Super Stallions of today, the Iron Horses have been lifting, hauling, and fighting for eight decades. This heritage patch honors the Marines who built that legacy.
HMH-461 traces its lineage to Marine Fighting Squadron 461 (VMF-461), founded 15 March 1944, flying F4U Corsairs. Reactivated in 1957 as the first HR2S/CH-37C squadron in the Marine Corps, the Iron Horses even supported NASA AeroBee Rocket recoveries at Wallops Island in 1961. The squadron transitioned to CH-53A Sea Stallions in 1966 and later the CH-53E Super Stallion. During Desert Storm, HMH-461 launched the legendary 500-mile flight into Somalia for Operation Eastern Exit, evacuating Americans from the U.S. Embassy in Mogadishu. The Iron Horses were first to land at the New Orleans Convention Center during Hurricane Katrina relief, first to aerial refuel using night vision goggles, and deployed repeatedly to Afghanistan, moving millions of pounds of cargo across hostile terrain.
