The term “Skid Kids” is a proud and enduring nickname within the United States Marine Corps aviation community, referring to the pilots, crew chiefs, and door gunners who fly and maintain the Corps’ skid-equipped light attack and utility helicopters — primarily the AH-1 Cobra/Viper and UH-1 Huey/Venom. Unlike the wheel-equipped heavy-lift helicopters of the Marine Corps fleet, these nimble, skid-mounted aircraft operate at the tactical edge, providing close air support, armed escort, armed reconnaissance, and utility transport in direct support of Marines on the ground.

The Skid Kids trace their operational heritage to the earliest days of Marine helicopter combat in Vietnam, where UH-1E Hueys and AH-1G Cobras revolutionized close air support and medevac operations. Marine light attack helicopter squadrons (HMLAs) have served with distinction in every major conflict since — from the jungles of Southeast Asia to the deserts of Kuwait and Iraq, the mountains of Afghanistan, and humanitarian operations around the globe. Today’s Skid Kids fly the AH-1Z Viper and UH-1Y Venom, the most advanced variants of these legendary airframes, continuing the tradition of providing Marines with responsive, lethal, and versatile air support from austere forward operating bases and the flight decks of amphibious assault ships.
