The 23rd Headquarters Special Troops — the legendary ‘Ghost Army’ — was one of the most unique and secretive units of World War II. Comprised of artists, designers, sound engineers, actors, and radio operators, the Ghost Army’s mission was tactical deception — making the German military believe that large American formations were in locations where no such forces existed. The unit employed inflatable tanks, trucks, and artillery pieces that looked completely real from the air, played recorded sounds of armored columns and troop movements through massive speakers, broadcast fake radio traffic, and even had soldiers impersonate officers from other units in local towns. The Ghost Army conducted 22 deception operations across Europe between 1944 and 1945, from Normandy to the Rhine crossing, protecting American forces and drawing enemy attention away from actual troop movements. The unit’s efforts are estimated to have saved tens of thousands of American lives. The Ghost Army’s existence remained classified for decades after the war, and many of the artists who served went on to distinguished careers — including fashion designer Bill Blass and painter Ellsworth Kelly. In 2022, Congress awarded the Ghost Army the Congressional Gold Medal. This sticker honors one of the most creative and unconventional units in American military history.
